DAVID GLATTSTEIN: I’m David Glattstein. I’m the president and co-founder of VEG.

DAVID BESSLER: I’m David Bessler, founder and CEO of VEG Veterinary Emergency Group.

DAVID GLATTSTEIN: For decade after decade, you would look at the veterinarian industry and see that it wasn’t changing, it wasn’t getting better for customers, wasn’t getting better for employees, and it wasn’t getting better for partners.

DAVID BESSLER: And I guess it’s cliche to say that it was broken, but it was broken. So for me, I was– I’m a people person, and so I was always really aware of what people were experiencing when they came in. So when I finally had my opportunity, I gathered a whole bunch of people were just like, let’s just do this totally differently, the way it’s supposed to be. And so we just did that. We started doing things totally differently.

DAVID GLATTSTEIN: If you think about the veterinarian business, most other owners of veterinarian hospitals or larger corporate entities treat it like a business in the sense of they don’t focus on culture, they don’t focus on treating people and their pets well. As the business guy, culture is the most scalable advantage that we have.

The way that we stay successful is being not normal, being totally different than everybody else.

DAVID BESSLER: I have not been normal ever. When it comes to VEG, if I have one chance to create an amazing company, that company is not going to be normal, or anybody in it for that matter.

DAVID GLATTSTEIN: Every single day, we need to push hard, work hard, and keep our high standards to stay not normal.

DAVID BESSLER: Our fight to make our vision a reality of becoming the world’s veterinary emergency company, that battle, that fight is what we call the VEGolution. Our company now is small. This is the ground floor. We’re a startup. There is no current answer for what is this world’s veterinary emergency company. We will become that answer over the next few years. We’re going to have hundreds, if not thousands, of VEGs around the world.

DAVID GLATTSTEIN: We want you to look around in New York City, in Chicago, in London, in China, anywhere across the world and have VEG hospitals there to serve people and their pets when they need it most.

DAVID BESSLER: That’s what emergency’s all about for me.

DAVID GLATTSTEIN: We’re working hard because we firmly believe we’re building something great, something transformative, something that you and your family can be proud of. It’s worth the effort. And when the whole world knows no other way other than the VEG way, you can say “I was there on day one.”

DAVID BESSLER: I always wanted to be a vet when I was a kid. I love nature. I love animals. I think if you ask any five-year-old kid what they want to be when they grow up, I think veterinarian will be on that list. And when you ask them to describe that veterinarian, they describe an emergency vet. And so for me, I get to do that. I love being a hero and helping people. It’s my calling.
