ALLISON ASPDEN: The Scribe program here at VEG, it’s a different idea that I’d actually pitched to other hospitals I’d worked for. But they weren’t quite as innovative as VEG. VEG really gave me the space to grow and run with that innovative idea and to revolutionize the field.

ALLISON ASPDEN: So the Scribe program, they tried to bridge the gap between human medicine and veterinary medicine. Essentially, our scribes shadow our doctors and write all of their medical records.

One of the hardest parts of the job is writing records for many hours after my shift on what are already very long, stressful shifts.

They have to remember everything from the entire day and put it on paper. And it really affects not only their mental health, but their work-life balance. So we’re trying to provide them an assistant, essentially, to do that for them so that they can focus more on the parts of the job they actually like. And they get to really jump in on the front lines and just watch every single case that walks through the door from start to finish.

ALLISON ASPDEN: The Scribe program has created a really amazing opportunity for our preveterinary students because it allows them to get amazing experience shadowing doctors and being with doctors one on one before they even step foot into veterinary school.
